THIS PAGE IS DEDICATED TO PROMOTING AWARENESS ABOUT THE UNIQUE CHALLENGES FACED BY OUR BELOVED FRENCH BULLDOGS.
Brachycephalic breeds (French Bulldogs, English bulldogs, pugs, etc.) commonly have physical features that make it difficult for them to breathe the way a dog normally can. The features of brachycephalic syndrome are stenotic nares (small, narrowed opening of the nostrils), elongated soft palate (extends down into the throat), small trachea, everted laryngeal saccules that can protrude out if there is chronic respiratory disease.
Brachycephalic dogs should not be exposed to extended periods of heat in the summer and should be kept indoors in a cool, air-conditioned environment, as being exposed to prolonged heat can cause respiratory distress. Care should be taken to not exercise these dogs in hot weather. Spray bottles with cold water, for example, are good ways to help keep your dog cool when in hot weather. And never leave a French Bulldog or any dog in a hot car!
Extra weight can exacerbate respiratory problems, as it puts additional pressure on their chest and diaphragm, making it harder for them to breath comfortably. Keeping them at a healthy weight helps reduce strain on their heart and lungs, improves their mobility, and supports overall health and longevity. A balanced diet and regular exercise are essential in preventing obesity, allowing French Bulldogs to breathe more easily and live a more active, comfortable life.
Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is a common neurological disorder in French bulldogs that occurs when the discs in the spine degenerate or herniate. It can cause pain, mobility issues, incontinence, and paralysis.
